The Lagoons of Zempoala constitute one of the most
beautiful places located near the city. This place,
declared National Park in the 1940’s, is located in the
Chichinautzin biological chain, in the districts of
Ocuilan de Arteaga, State of Mexico and Huitzilac, in
the State of Morelos.
This National Park consists of several lagoons that are
fed by rivers that descend from the hilly area of the
Ajusco and other neighboring mounts, and also by rain
water, which generates other non-permanent lagoons
during the summer. This place is surrounded by exuberant
temperate and cold weather woods, and contains certain
vegetation like oaks, cedars, pines and firs. Its fauna
consists of deer, birds, small mammals and reptiles. It
also has areas fit for recreational weekend activities
like a camp and picnic area and some water and land
sports.
It takes approximately an hour and a half to get to this
place from the centre of Mexico City. Take the highway
to Cuernavaca, and in Tres Marías follow the signs that
say Huitzilac and Lagunas de Zempoala. We recommend you
take warm and comfortable clothes due to cold weather in
the area. |
