The area of La Condesa has acquired some remarkable
examples of architecture throughout the years, from
its original Art Deco buildings to Mexico’s most
innovative contemporary architecture, we become
surrounded by a place in which design fuses with
fashion and gastronomy in one of the most
fashionable places in Mexico City.
The origins of La Condesa date back to the 20’s and
30’s when numerous buildings started being built in
what long ago was the Condesa de Miravalle Racetrack
(hence the name), which from the start had one of
the best planned infrastructures in the city; proof
of this are it’s large parks and wide avenues full
of trees, this and its centric location next to the
Roma area, made it the favourite place for the high
and middle classes, as well as for a great many
people from different parts of the world, which gave
it an urban and cosmopolitan character.
The area of La Condesa has beautiful parks and green
areas, like Park Mexico, which is located in the
centre of the district and has numerous and
beautiful fountains, a small lake with ducks and
several ponds and water features, elements that make
it one of the most beautiful parks in the city. This
park also has a great Art Deco-style open theatre,
which is a perfect example of the impact this
artistic style had in the area.
Another outstanding feature of this area are its
beautiful roundabouts, all of them with Art
Deco-style fountains, like the Iztaccíhuatl Plaza or
the Popocatépetl roundabout.
In the last few years this area has experienced a
strong rebirth, and has turned into one of the
popular sites in Mexico City; with its numerous
exterior terraces in which office workers, artists,
students and designers alike come together and have
interesting conversations which give the place a
bohemian and intellectual aura, much like New York’s
Soho or Paris’ Latin Quarter.
