Located in the middle of the rocky area of
University City, this cultural complex houses some
of the most important cultural buildings in the
city.
The University Cultural Centre was built during the
1970’s to provide the National Autonomous University
of Mexico with an according and suitable cultural
space, and it was decided it would be located to the
south of University City so as to ease that sector
of the population into cultural activities.
This cultural complex is made up of several concert
halls from which the Nezahualcóyotl Theatre stands
out, as it’s considered the best in Latin America
for its excellent acoustics. The National Library
also belongs to this complex, as does the Universum
Museum of Science which provides children and young
adults with the most interesting scientific
knowledge in a fun environment.
The Sculptural Space deserves a special mention;
it’s an ample, rocky area in which great
contemporary sculptures of some of the most famous
plastic artists in Mexico, like Matías Goeritz and
Sebastián, fuse with the natural surroundings
creating one of the most impressive and evocative
spectacles in Mexico City. Especially outstanding is
a series of white sculptures surrounding a volcanic
crater, area in which people can experience a
feeling of immensity and can witness a total
integration between art and nature.
It is possible to access the University Cultural
Centre from Insurgentes Avenue or from the
Periférico. The entrance to the Sculptural Space is
free.
